Established in 2001, the Dot NAME generic top-level domain name extension is the only one meant for personal sites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other designations people are famous by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to register john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already registered 3rd-level names remained running.
